Recent discoveries uncovering yet more evidence of residential school abuse is to say the absolute least truly horrible. Not “horrible” in the sense of a bad taste in the mouth, easily rinsed and brushed away. Rather, we are faced with the ” horrible” in the sense of fear, shock and nausea. The horror of how deep the depravity that existed throughout the past is ingrained to the human condition, and how far its tendrils infest to this day must guide our response to this crisis.
It is indeed a crisis. For decades the systemic abuse of the institutions we have valued and trusted for generations has gone un-noticed and uncorrected. Understandably so: people tend not to question what they find comfortable, and relax into the balms offered by their political and spiritual masters.
