What hath happened?
From AI chat:
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) officially terminated the charitable registration of The Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF (Business Number: 857321517RR0001) effective March 16, 2026. [1, 2]
Because the CRA is legally prohibited from discussing specific details of a charity’s file until a formal revocation letter is made public, comparing similar organizations and examining the legal structure of Canadian charity law can help clarify the situation.
How to See the List of Other Revoked Organizations
To find and monitor lists of other recently revoked organizations, you have two primary official tools:
- The Canada Gazette (Official Government Record)
- Every month, the federal government publishes the names of charities facing proposed or finalized revocations in the Canada Gazette, Part I under the “Commissions” section.
- For example, the March 21, 2026 edition explicitly listed other contemporary closures, such as the Council on Homosexuality and Religion Inc., alongside dozens of others like Grace Central Presbyterian Church and Smart Serve Foundation.
- The CRA Advanced Search Tool
- Visit the CRA List of Charities Advanced Search.
- Change the Charity Status drop-down filter from “Registered” to “Revoked – Audited” or “Revoked – Voluntary”.
- Set the “Effective date of status” to a range covering March 2026 to see all entities that lost status at the same time. [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
Understanding “Why”: A Comparison of Revocation Types
When the CRA states an organization “no longer meets the requirements for charitable status”, the underlying cause generally falls into one of three common categories. Evaluating these categories helps contextualize the status of the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF: [1]
The Probable Legal Hurdle for the Lions of Canada Fund
While a detailed audit report has not been heavily publicized, the foundational problem for a group structured like the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF usually stems from Canada’s strict “Own Activities” or “Qualified Donee” rules.
- The Rule: Under Canadian law, a registered charity cannot simply act as a pass-through fund or a “conduit” to collect money in Canada and forward it to a foreign organization (like the US-based Lions Clubs International Foundation).
- The Requirement: To send money abroad legally, a Canadian charity must maintain strict “direction and control” over how every dollar is spent, establish robust intermediary agreements, and closely monitor projects.
- The Outcome: If the CRA determines that a Canadian fund is merely acting as a vehicle to funnel Canadian tax-receipted money straight into an international body’s global pool, it will terminate the registration for failing to meet the legal definition of a Canadian charity. [1, 13, 14, 15]
What This Means for Donors Moving Forward
- No More Tax Receipts: Any donations made to the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF after March 16, 2026, are entirely ineligible for a Canadian tax credit.
- International Giving Continues: You can still choose to support the global mission directly via Lions Clubs International Foundation, but these global gifts are strictly non-receiptable for Canadian tax purposes.
- Local Impact Unchanged: Local Canadian Lions Clubs operate independently; their local community grant access through LCIF is not affected by this administrative termination. [1, 7, 12, 14, 15]
If you would like to track down the final public disclosure documents for this specific case, I can show you how to submit an official Public Information Request to the CRA for their complete letter of revocation. Would you like those steps? [16]

I hjave sent a letter requesting clarification from VDG Frank Sellers, District N2 requesting clarification.
It’s hard to not be angered by this. From the references on the CRA website (https://apps.cra-arc.gc.ca/ebci/hacc/srch/pub/chrtydtls/857321517RR0001) it would appear this has been a growing problem since 2017. Obviously not an overnight rash decision on CRA’s part, this would appear to be yet another example of work carried out in silence and in the dark. Why were Lions not informed?
